My name is Becca DeKay-Robson. I was fortunate to have had close relationships with all four of my grandparents. In 2004, I recorded my first personal history project - a collection of my paternal grandfather’s stories and memories. I soon followed with projects for all of my grandparents, and through this work, I discovered a profound truth: what we see skin-deep barely scratches the surface of a person’s life’s journey. Behind every face are vastly different experiences that have formed people into who they are today. These stories often seem distant from the person in front of us, yet they played a crucial role in that person's "becoming." Understanding where we came from and the ones that helped shape us enhances our understanding of ourselves.
Preserving these stories became my passion. Reflecting back upon my decision to start this journey of recording the life histories of my loved ones, I now know how significant that decision was. Three of my grandparents have passed away, but I have a lasting record of them. Creating these priceless and lasting treasures set me on my journey to help others do the same.
I currently live near Spokane, Washington. I cherish spending time with my family and love creating memories while on outdoor adventures with them. In my spare time, I can be found creating art, drinking tea, gardening, reading, adventuring, traveling, and connecting with those I love.
At Elm and Ember, we believe in the power of storytelling to endure and transform.
Just as the Elm tree is known for its strength, long lifespan, and adaptability, we believe these qualities are found in each of us. Like an Ember, a story holds the potential to ignite reflection, spark creativity, and kindle connection.
Together, these symbols represent your legacy, rooted in strength, glowing with meaning, and capable of lighting the way for generations to come.
